Impressions of Santorini

Santorini is a Greek island. It may make you think of beautiful beaches, villages with white washed houses and churches and lovely sunsets. You are right in thinking these things as the island certainly has a lot of those things. It has a selection of lovely villages where you will be able to explore the cafés and tavernas as well as the churches and market places. The coast has dramatic cliffs as well as dark sand beaches. Each village has a charm of its own and so it may be difficult to choose the one that will suit you. It could be easier to visit several or maybe return for a second visit, which you are bound to want to do anyway.

The island has arguably one of the best landscapes in Greece, which is why it is so popular with holidaymakers. The island is a submerged volcano and has tall cliffs upon which many of the villages are built, meaning that they offer spectacular views. The island is also very famous for its amazing sunsets and so if natural beauty is something that you enjoy, this island will be the perfect place for you to visit.

The hot desert climate is attractive to many, who want to enjoy some lovely sunshine when on holiday. It is still most popular during the summer months though, so if you want warmth but at a quieter time, then it could be better to visit in the winter.  It is one of the only two European places that has this climate which make sit extremely attractive to visitors. Water is therefore scarce on the island as it has no rivers but there is a desalination plant which provides running water to most houses.

For those that enjoy history, there are the ruins of the old town to look at. There are many interesting things to look at including paintings, houses, pipes and a loom workshop. These have only recently reopened to the pubic and are well worth a look, to give you an idea of what the ancient people were like. The ruins have not all yet been revealed as they were all covered in ash from the volcano. The last major eruption was in 1956 and since then many of the buildings have been rebuilt. With tourism being the main income for the people of the island, it is very welcoming to visitors and caters for them well.

Family Holidays in Santorini

Santorini is often considered to be a romantic destination but that does not mean that families are not welcome. There is plenty for families to do and they are welcome at many hotels.

The bigger beaches have water sports as well as children’s play areas and so there is lots for children to do to keep them occupied. There are great places to walk and of course the sea to play in and the beach to play on. Some of the beaches are sand and others are pebbles and the sand is black and red so makes for interesting sculptures and castles!

There are plenty of places to eat and drink, which is always useful with families as children are often less accepting of new types of food. The island is very much geared towards tourists and so it has a big range of international dishes so that there is something to please all of their visitors.

It is important to choose a destination on the island that does have things to offer that the family will like. If they are happy to walk around and relax on the beach then everywhere has this, but if they have specific activities they like doing, perhaps particular sports, shops or places of historical interest, then you will need to make sure that the place that you are staying has easy access to somewhere that can provide this. It is possible to find lots of different things to do on the island and so it is just a matter of doing some research or discussing your needs with your travel agent.

It can also be worth reading reviews of the island and speaking to people who have been there with their families. This will give you an idea of the family activities available and where you might want to stay to take full advantage of this. Obviously, a review is just one persons opinion but some websites have a selection of opinions from different people and this will help you to be able to decide whether it is a suitable place to go. If a  majority of people recommend it for families, then chances are that you will enjoy it,although we are all different of course. Use all the information available to make up your own mind depending on the needs and expectations that your particular family has with regards to an ideal holiday.
