Santorini
The jewel of the Aegean, this spectacular island with its white washed cubit and domed houses, churches and tavernas built on the edge, sliding their way down towards the sea is not just popular but also a must to all those attracted by the Greek Aegean Island adventure. Fira or Thira, the island with its shops and stunning spectacular views is the capital of the island.
Karmari - A popular resort on the east coast with a long stretch of dark sand and pebble beach and numerous tavernas, bars and lively night life. |
Greece is a land of sea and mountains. Over a fifth of the Greek land mass is comprised of islands, numbering several thousand if you count every floating crag - and nowhere in Greece will you find yourself more than 96km (60 miles) from the sea. It should come as no surprise that the sea molds the Greek imagination, as well as its history. Mainland Greece, meanwhile, is a great vertebrate, with the Pindos range reaching from north to south, and continuing like a tail, through the Peloponnese.
From Santorini's dramatic caldera to the reconstructed palace of Knossos on Crete, the Greek Islands are spectacular. There aren't many places in the world where the forces of nature have come together with the ancient sites and architectural treasures to create such dramatic results.
The islanders will welcome you with the warmth and hospitality that they are renowned for and once you have visited, you will undoubtedly become as addicted as countless others.
